More Than a Game: Unity Hope and the Spirit of Vanuatu.

I have attended many sporting events over the years, but Sunday’s OFC Pro League
match between Vanuatu United FC and Bula FC was something I will carry in my
heart for a very long time. It was not simply a football match. It was a testament to
the enduring power of sport to unite people, to give voice to hope, and to remind us
that no matter where life has taken us, we are — and always will be — one people.
Full Circle: From Eden Park to the Semi-Finals
Back in January, I had the privilege of attending the very first game of the first-ever
OFC Pro League in Oceania — a landmark moment for our region and for football.
That opening match at Eden Park was, fittingly, also between Bula FC and Vanuatu
United FC. To now witness these same two sides meet again, this time with a place in
the semi-finals on the line, felt nothing short of extraordinary. The journey from that
first kick-off to this defining moment has been remarkable to follow.
The growth I have seen in Vanuatu United FC — both on and off the field — has been
truly awesome to behold. This is not just a team getting results. This is a team
building an identity, a culture, and an inspiration for a nation.
A Heartstopper of the Highest Order
Let me be honest: Sunday’s game was an absolute heart-stopper. Whether you were
there in person or watching through the live stream from wherever in the world you
called home that evening, you would know exactly what I mean. Both teams
displayed extraordinary skill, determination, and passion. There were moments of
brilliance from both sides — moments that had the crowd holding its breath and
reaching for the person standing next to them.
It was truly fantastic to be in the crowd and experience that energy first-hand. The
quality of football on display was a credit to both clubs and a proud statement of
what Oceania can produce on the international stage.
What Stood Out Most: The Unity of Our People
As wonderful as the football was, it is not the goals or the final whistle that will stay
with me longest. What moved me most deeply was witnessing the extraordinary
tapestry of people who came together to support Vanuatu United FC.
I looked around that ground and I saw our residents, our students, our RSE workers
— many of whom had travelled for quite some hours to be there. I saw family
members of some of the team’s international players, who had come not just to
cheer, but to witness history. People from all walks of life, from different
backgrounds and different corners of this world, standing side by side, chanting,
singing hymns, and urging our players to never give up.
That is something no final score can fully capture. Sport, at its very best, does this: it
strips away everything that divides us and invites us to simply dare — to hope, to
dream, to believe together. Sunday gave us all of that and more.
A Path Forward for Young Vanuatu
This tournament is about so much more than trophies. It is giving young people in
Vanuatu something real and tangible to strive towards — a genuine pathway to
professional sport on the international stage. For a young girl or boy watching from
Port Vila or from the islands, seeing players from Vanuatu compete at this level,
winning, advancing, representing our nation with pride, sends a message that cannot
be taught in a classroom: you can do this.
The OFC Pro League — the first of its kind in Oceania — is writing a new chapter in
the story of Pacific football, and Vanuatu is writing some of the most compelling
pages. I am enormously proud of everyone involved: the players, the coaching staff,
the management, and every single person who showed up — in person or in spirit —
to believe in them.
Wednesday Cannot Come Soon Enough
As we look ahead to Wednesday 20th May and the semi-final play-off, I want our
team to know: we are with you. Every resident, every student, every RSE worker who
made that journey, every family member who cheered themselves hoarse — we carry
you onto that pitch with us.
Go well, Vanuatu United FC. You are already making us proud.
