Calling All Wordsmiths: New Poetry Competition Launched

PORT VILA, Vanuatu (1 May 2026) — An exciting new chapter for ni-Vanuatu

storytelling begins today with the launch of the Poetri Pawa Praes (PPP). This national competition is designed to amplify diverse local voices and shape the role of poetic storytelling in contemporary Vanuatu.

The Poetri Pawa Praes celebrates poetry as a powerful tool for reflection and change.

This year, writers are invited to explore the theme ‘Routes and Roots’, examining how cultural foundations provide an anchor even as they adapt to the modern world.

"I will be looking for intentional, grounded poetry that uses vivid, culturally resonant imagery to explore social truths and complex emotions," says Rebecca Tobo Olul-Hossen, leading ni-Vanuatu poet and co-founder of Sot Sot Storian.

The PPP emerged from the immense volume of poetry submitted to the Sot Sot Storian competition in 2024. By establishing a dedicated prize, the Vanuatu Creative Writing collective aims to foster excellence and mastery in the genre. Veteran of the local literary scene Telstar Jimmy, emphasizes the need for technical craft and authenticity in these submissions.

"We are searching for original and emotionally honest poems," Jimmy says. "I want to see a unique voice paired with purposeful sound techniques to create a resonant, cliché-free experience." To ensure the competition captures the full spectrum of the ni-Vanuatu experience, the judging panel also includes Ethan-Xavier Hakwa (Mantis), Pacific Break’s 2025 winner and well-known local rapper and producer. His involvement highlights the competition commitment to rhythm and fearless expression.

"I'm looking for powerful, rhythmically driven poetry," says Hakwa. "It’s about capturing the authentic ni-Vanuatu experience through a unique voice and fearless cultural expression."

Submission Details and Eligibility

The competition is designed to remove barriers to participation with free entry and a commitment to inclusive judging.

● Eligibility: Open to ni-Vanuatu citizens, residents, and those of Vanuatu

heritage.

● Languages: Submissions are encouraged in Bislama, English, French, or any

indigenous language of Vanuatu.

● Format: Entries must be no more than 200 words and 40 lines.

● Exposure: Winners will receive prizes and gain international exposure via a

public online magazine.

All writers, aspiring wordsmiths, and lovers of language are encouraged to participate in this historic creative milestone.
